Call to Action

>> Tuesday, May 29, 2012

Lately I’ve heard many speakers refer to the “Call to Action.” I hear it at seminars and try to include it in the e-newsletters I send from work. One segment of our local news bears the “Call to Action” title while a large denomination uses this moniker to challenge their people toward justice and equality.
One morning, I pondered a call to action from scripture. Found in Psalm 37:7, the Psalmist gives us five calls to action.

  1. Be Still – I’m so busy, I find it difficult to sit still – much less, be still. Sometimes I don’t even know how to think still. My mind travels in a hundred directions with plots, characters and writing ideas, even when I’m just sitting in a chair. I’m still trying to learn how to be still.
  2. Rest in the Lord – part of learning to be still is finding that place of restoration. God never commanded us to live stressful lives. We invite that ourselves, and our culture douses us with it. But as we learn to be still, we begin to discover that place of peaceful rest.
  3. Wait for Him – wait for his voice, wait for his guidance, wait for him to join us for a conversation. Sometimes I need to just stop everything, get on my knees and wait for him to join me.
  4. Patiently lean on Him – to lean on something means that I trust it will not topple over, taking me with it. Christ is the only God-man that I totally trust to keep me upright. Learning to lean on Him with patience is part of the restoration package.
  5. Don’t fret – any time I move into a state of worry, I am no longer still. I have sabotaged rest and challenged patience. But as I learn to be still, as I focus on resting in Him, as I wait to converse with Him and patiently lean on Him – I have no time left for worry.
This call to action helps me stay focused on what is really important in life. As I move forward to market my book, schedule booksignings, work at GateWay of Hope Ministries, speak for various groups and continue to write His words – I need to diligently practice the Psalm 37 Call to Action.
Will you join me in this challenge?
"Be still and rest in the Lord; wait for Him and patiently lean yourself upon Him; fret not yourself….” Psalm 37:7 Amplified
Prayer: Oh, God – I so often miss being with you. Help me to be more diligent to rest in you and find that sweet place to be still.

Thank you, Debra. It's one of my favorites, too. I'm glad it was a blessing to you.

Thanks so much for the clear description of leaning on Him. It's always been difficult for me to grasp leaning on something, or someone, I can't see. This really helps!

Thanks, Genie. We all have to keep learning that "leaning" concept. Fortunately, He is strong enough to keep us upright.
